We offer a variety of engaging courses throughout the year to help you enhance your skills and try new activities. The first week is free to try! Please note that you will be charged if you pre-register and withdraw after the program starts. Exceptions include squash lessons, self-defense and Latin/ballroom workshops.
How It Works
- Classes are open to everyone (students and the general public).
- No membership is required, though current McMaster students and David Braley Athletic Centre members receive discounted rates.
- Payment methods: Visa, Mastercard, Amex (online and in person); debit, cheque and cash (in person only)
- Registration timelines by term: August 1 (fall), December 1 (winter), April 1 (spring), June 1 (summer)
- Space is limited, so reserve your spot early.

Discover Our Instructional Program Offerings
Ballet: Beginner
This is an introduction to ballet techniques. It includes posture, foot and arm placements, steps and gestures on the floor, at the barre and in the centre. Ballet shoes are not required.
Ballet: Beginner/Intermediate
This class is designed for students whose level is between beginner and intermediate and who have some ballet experience. Ballet shoes are not required. Aspects of each level will be included.
Ballroom Dance: Beginner
Learn many of the traditional social dances — Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Samba, Rumba, and Jive. No experience is necessary; partners and singles are welcome.
Fencing Instructional
Improve your coordination and reflexes and have fun doing it! Dave O’Donnell, Head Coach of the McMaster Varsity Fencing Team, as well as assistant coaches, will lead these classes. Equipment is provided.
Fun-In-Athletics
This 8-week track and field-based program is for children ages 6–12. Participants will learn a wide range of exercises and drills to help improve fitness and physical literacy, specifically how to run, jump and throw correctly. This program is delivered in partnership with Stoney Creek Athletics, a registered member of Athletics Ontario.
Hip Hop: Beginner
This class will focus on the fundamental movements and grooving in Hip-Hop. Students will learn different elements of dance and how to dance to a variety of Hip-Hop songs. No experience is required; just have fun!
Karate: Beginner
Karate is an Asian system of unarmed combat using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows, involving mental as well as physical training. This very popular and dynamic program at McMaster is designed for all belt levels and includes Goju Ryu and Kobudo (weaponry) styles.
Karate: Intermediate/Advanced
Karate is an Asian system of unarmed combat using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows, involving mental as well as physical training. This very popular and dynamic program at McMaster is designed for all belt levels and includes Goju Ryu and Kobudo (weaponry) styles.
Karate: Spring or Summer Beginner and Intermediate
Designed for all belt levels, it includes Goju Ryu and Kobudo (weaponry) styles. This is a twice-weekly program, and attendance on both nights is highly recommended.
Kathak Indian Dance
Kathak is a north Indian classical dance form focused on rhythmic patterns, lyrical movements and varying tempos. This ancient art form continues to thrive and develop through dancers in India and the South Asian diaspora. This class will focus on the fundamentals of the dance form.
Kickboxing Fundamentals
A well-rounded introduction to the sport, suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Participants will learn basic techniques and kicks, combinations, fitness training and defense practice. Safety and etiquette are emphasized.
Latin Dance: Beginner
Students are introduced to the Latin rhythms danced in North America. Dance styles include the Salsa, Merengue and Cha Cha. Learn some steps you can do on your own, or with a partner.
Latin Dance: Intermediate
Students continue to work on the Latin rhythms danced in North America — e.g., Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba and Jive. Some previous experience is highly recommended.
Latin/Ballroom Dance Combo Workshop
This condensed 4-week Beginner class will combine some of the best of Rhythm Ballroom and Latin dance steps, including Salsa, Cha Cha and Jive. Singles and partners are welcome.
Lyrical/Contemporary Dance
Lyrical Dance is a fusion of styles that often uses techniques from jazz and ballet combined to create free movement. Students will have the opportunity to learn choreographic routines. Some dance experience is recommended but not required.
Muay Thai
You will learn systems of neutrality, defense, transition and attack using the strikes of the fist, elbow, kick, knee and stand-up grapple. This program is designed for the beginner and advanced athlete with an emphasis on Muay Thai skills and drills, muscular endurance, strength and flexibility all in an atmosphere of fun and fitness.
Pilates: Beginner
Students gain knowledge of good alignment based on a stable “centre,” increased abdominal strength and free joint movement. Pilates is designed to improve flexibility, build strength and develop control and endurance in the entire body, and it puts emphasis on developing a strong core, consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, low back and hips.
Pilates: Intermediate
Some previous Pilates experience is recommended. Students gain knowledge of good alignment based on a stable “centre,” increased abdominal strength and free joint movement. Pilates is designed to improve flexibility, build strength and develop control and endurance in the entire body, and it puts emphasis on developing a strong core, consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, low back and hips.

Self-Defense for Everyone
This class is a practical, simple self-defense class that splits its focus between discussions on personal boundaries and comfort zones, to physical attacks and how to deal with them. Throughout, your instructor will guide you through the practical aspects of self-defense, what options you have for getting out of a bad situation and how to use your awareness, arms, legs and even your voice, as weapons.
Squash (Group Lessons)
Raquets and goggles are provided, or bring your own. This programme will provide participants with the opportunity to develop their squash skills or refresh skills previously learned. No experience is necessary.
Squash (Private Lessons)
One-on-one lessons to develop or refresh your squash skills. Equipment is provided.
Triathlon Cross Training (Run and Bike)
Led by Dr. Roy Till, an NCCP certified triathlon and cycling coach, who is there to help you achieve your running and cycling goals. Training is tailored to the individual abilities of the participants.
Women on Weights
This is a program designed to engage and teach women of all ages and abilities the importance of exercise, specifically Resistance Training. This six-week program will teach participants proper technique for exercises and the benefits of training.
Wrestling: Beginner
This is an introductory class for beginners and is the base discipline for all grappling sports, which teaches an individual how to take their opponent down and defend takedowns. Wrestling is a great way to challenge yourself mentally and also improve your physical fitness as it requires a combination of strength, endurance and mobility.
Yoga: Beginner
Yoga is an ancient system of breathing practices, physical exercises, postures and meditation intended to integrate the practitioner’s body, mind and spirit. Learn the fundamentals and enjoy deeper levels of health and vitality while you build strength, improve your balance, increase flexibility and reduce stress and tension for overall wellness.
Yoga: Beginner/Intermediate
This is designed for beginners and also participants with some yoga experience looking to learn some Intermediate poses. Enhance your practice of yoga postures that are physically and energetically balanced in a safe, non-competitive and inclusive environment, with a choice of milder or more challenging options.
Yoga: Power
This is a more vigorous form of yoga practice which is especially stimulating to the cardiovascular system. Yoga sequences will be introduced and practiced to help develop strength and flexibility, improve alignment and awareness and recharge the mind and body. Some prior yoga experience is helpful, but beginners are also welcome.
Yoga: Relax and Restore
This class will combine Beginner Yoga with Restorative yoga poses to help us learn to relax and rest deeply and completely. During deep relaxation, all the organ systems of the body are benefited, as well as improvement in digestion, sleep patterns, the reduction of muscle tension and lessened generalized fatigue.
Yoga: Women's Only

Red Cross First Aid Certifications
Courses from September to April are offered only on weekends, while courses in May/June include weekday and weekend courses. Please note that courses are not offered in July or August. Visit MacRecOnline for more details and to check how many spots are left in a course.
- Spring course registration opens on March 3.
- Fall course registration opens on August 1.
- Winter course registration opens on December 1.
Duration: 2 days, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day (100% attendance required)

Topics Covered:
- Emergency First Aid (choking treatment, CPR, severe bleeding, shock, etc.)
- Poisoning
- Bone and joint injuries
- Hypothermia
- Moving a first aid casualty
- Medical conditions (diabetic crisis, convulsions, heart attack, stroke)
Certification: Includes CPR “C” and AED certification, valid for 3 years.

- FT Staff/Faculty: $0
This course is designed to recertify and review skills. It includes CPR “C” and AED certification.
Duration: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (100% attendance required)

Important Notes:
- One-day recertification courses can only be taken once before a full 2-day certification is required again.
- If you completed a one-day recertification course for your previous certification, you must attend a full two-day Standard First Aid course to remain certified.
- Following each full two-day certification, only the one-day recertification is required, but it must be completed before the certification expiry date.
- Your certification must be with Red Cross to recertify with Red Cross.
- All certifications remain valid for 3 years before expiring.

Registration Instructions:
- Register at the Recreation Business office at the Joan Buddle Service Desk in DBAC (pay with debit, cash, cheque, or credit card).
- Or print the Registration Form, complete it thoroughly, and email it to reconline@mcmaster.ca. If using the form, payment is by Visa, MC or Amex only.
- Please note that there is no online registration option.
Refund Policy:
- No refunds, only credits on accounts will be issued for cancellations less than one business day prior to the course.
- No-shows will be charged.
- A $15 administrative fee applies for refunds.
- For registered employees or anyone with a $0 fee, department account numbers will be charged for no-shows and cancellations less than 1 business day prior to the course.

Information for Staff and Faculty
Please first verify with your Human Resources advisor if you are eligible for free training, as the cost is covered by HR, not Athletics & Recreation. (Generally, all full-time staff and faculty are eligible.) You must include your employee number, department Chartfield account number (Fund Code – Account – Department – Program Code) and contact information must be included on the registration form if you are registering at $0. Departments will only be charged in the case of a no-show or for cancellations less than one business day prior to the course (or if a registrant is deemed not eligible for free training by McMaster HR).
Note: Upon successful completion of this First Aid training, McMaster employees will be expected to assist with minor first aid injuries within the workplace as well as taking charge of and inspecting first aid kits in your area of work.
