Located at McMaster University, the Pulse offers everything you need to live an active, healthy lifestyle. Our state-of-the-art facility features a wide range of fitness amenities, programs, classes and more for individuals of all abilities and skill levels.
What We Offer
A Pulse membership gives you access to all our equipment, drop-in fitness and cycling classes, and the Feather Family Climbing Wall. Plus, there’s always at least one personal trainer available on the floor to assist with any questions or provide guidance.

Accessible Equipment
The entire Fitness Centre has been laid out to maximize accessibility of equipment for people of all physical abilities.
In addition, the Pulse features a dedicated multi-station universal weight training machine and upper-body ergometer for people with disabilities. Combined with the Pulse’s ADAPT program, users can work out safely and effectively.

Climbing Wall
Feather Family Climbing Wall is 30 feet wide and 36 feet high and offers members an opportunity to reach new heights in fitness.
The climbing wall caters to all skill levels, with a variety of routes to offer different levels of difficulty for beginners and experts alike.
Access to the climbing wall is included in a Pulse membership.

Fitness Studios
2,000+ square feet complete with wood floors, mirrors and floor-to-ceiling glass on two sides.
Hosting group fitness classes and open-use time, the studio is partnered with all the equipment — BOSU balls, steps, body bars and more — to keep you going.

Cycling Studio
Featuring Keiser’s M3+ Indoor Cycle Bikes. Join in on a class or cycle at your leisure.
Each bike is equipped with a computer that displays revolutions per minute, power output (in Watts), heart rate (polar compatible), gear and more!
Cycling classes are included with a Pulse membership. No need to sign up in advanced. All classes are first-come, first-serve.

Women-Only Section
Private women’s only section equipped with squat racks, free weights, cable machines, cardio equipment and floor space.
Please note the following:
- Male staff will not be entering the women’s only section.
- If a male staff member needs to enter the area for equipment maintenance or to ensure its safety, a female staff member will announce their entry beforehand.
- In the event of an emergency (e.g., if first aid is needed) a male staff may enter the area unannounced.
We appreciate your cooperation, and we thank you for bringing any concerns regarding these regulations to a staff member’s attention.

In-person group fitness and cycling classes are located on the second floor of the Pulse Fitness Centre. Access the studios using the Pulse stairs or elevator. Advanced registration is not required, so please drop in! Group fitness and cycling classes are included in all Pulse memberships.

Barre Fusion: Our 50-minute Barre Fusion class combines the traditional feel of barre fitness with the flexibility of an open studio setting, emphasizing strength, flexibility and sculpting while incorporating low-impact, full-body movements to tone and define your muscles.
Cardio and Core: This 50-minute class combines a cardio segment to improve cardiovascular fitness with exercises to improve core strength. All fitness levels are welcome.
Core and Stretch: This 50-minute class will include Core exercises but will also have a longer Stretching portion to help you improve your athleticism and range of motion during your strength workouts. Fit this class in for functional stretches focused on shoulders, hips, low back, glutes and hamstrings.
HIIT: Get ready to push yourself in this 50-minute class. Utilizing the popular High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), these high-intensity classes will really get your heart pumping and build your strength. You will walk away having used all the main muscle groups.
Pilates Fusion: This 50-minute class is a hybrid workout combining Pilates mat work with some Yoga and Strength elements. This dynamic and engaging workout is aimed to enhance your core strength, coordination, flexibility, and endurance.
Soca Cardio Dance: There is nothing like dance movements and island vibes to get your energy and confidence high after this class. During this 50-minute class, you will be taught the basic Soca dance steps, coordinated with mood-boosting Caribbean music that will strengthen your heart and muscles. No dance experience is required.
Strength: Strength classes are a fun 50-minute head-to-toe session. We will use weights and reps to tone the lower body, upper body and core with a variety of exercises to target these areas. Strength training includes many functional movements that reflect movements you make in your daily life and is helpful for everyday tasks, athletic performance and injury prevention. All fitness levels are welcome.
Strength and Cardio: This 50-minute class targets full-body strength exercises to build muscle and includes a cardio segment to improve cardiovascular fitness. All fitness levels are welcome.
Strength and Step: Join us for a dynamic 50-minute Step and Strength class! We’ll kick things off with 20 minutes of step — an enjoyable, steady-state cardio workout that can be modified for all fitness levels. For the rest of the class, we will focus on strength training, incorporating dumbbells and bodyweight exercises. Both step and strength training are highly functional and perfect for everyone, regardless of experience.
Strength and Stretch: This 50-minute class offers the best of both worlds. We target full-body strength exercises to build muscle and include a longer, comprehensive stretching portion to improve flexibility. All fitness levels are welcome.

Yoga with Various Instructors: These 50-minute classes will increase functional flexibility, enhance body control, connect mind and body and create a sense of balance and vitality. Each instructor has their own special style, so try them all. Mats are provided.
Zumba®: This 50-minute dance-fitness class incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements. No fitness or dance experience is required to participate. The class alternates between fast and slow rhythms. Zumba® provides a balance of cardiorespiratory exercise, muscle-toning and mobility of all joints of the body. Dance movement modifications and progressions are given as needed.
Begin to Cycle: Have you ever tried indoor cycling before? Nervous to try it out? Come to this 30-minute beginner class! Your instructor will walk you through everything from setting up your bike to cooling down. This is a welcoming space for everyone. Don’t forget your water bottle.
HIIT & Hills Cycle: If you want to really get your heart pumping and legs strengthened, this 50-minute class is the one for you! High-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, includes alternating fixed intervals of high and low intensity, with varying levels of speeds, tensions and durations. With a dynamic change in workout stimulus, this class has something for all levels, including beginners and offers tremendous fitness benefits.
Mac Cycle: In the saddle, out of the saddle, speed work, hills — this class has it all! Every fitness level is welcome for this 50-minute ride led by an experienced cycling instructor.
Soca Cycle: During this class, you will pedal to the rhythm of exhilarating Caribbean music, designed to boost your mood and confidence. This class combines the basics of Soca dance movements with cycling, providing a full-body workout that strengthens your heart and muscles. Bring your enthusiasm and get ready to ride to the beat.
Programs and Services Designed for All
Our programs are a great way to start your fitness journey at the Pulse. Qualified staff will be here to support you along the way.
Women on Weights is a six-week program designed to empower women of all ages and abilities by emphasizing the importance of exercise, particularly resistance training. Throughout the program, participants will learn proper exercise techniques, understand the benefits of strength training and acquire essential gym etiquette. You will also gain insights into proper nutrition, various types of aerobic training and effective resistance training strategies. Most importantly, this program will help you understand your body and build confidence in your abilities.
Our goal is for you to feel strong, powerful and knowledgeable by the end of the program, enabling you to walk away feeling confident and comfortable in the gym.
- This program features a small class size, allowing for more personal attention from the trainer.
- Please note that this is not a traditional workout program. Instead, you will learn techniques that can be applied even after the program concludes.
- A Pulse membership is not required to take this course; however, it will be necessary for continuing training outside the scheduled program dates.

Fitness Instructor Specialist (CanFitPro)
This course will be held in DBAC on November 7, 8, & 14th, 2026.

This certification is required to teach Group Fitness Classes at the Pulse. This comprehensive 25-hour course will enhance your knowledge and boost your confidence in leading a group fitness class to music. Topics covered include:
- Aspects of fitness, wellness and basic training principles
- Fitness theory: skeletal, muscular, neurological, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems
- Kinesiology/anatomy in action and bioenergetics
- Components of a fitness class from warm-up to cool-down
- Musicality: phrasing, cueing and appropriate music selection
- Leadership and motivation skills
- Special populations and injury prevention
Participants are encouraged to come dressed for physical activity.

Personal Trainer Specialist (CanFitPro)

This certification is required to be a Personal Trainer/Floor Monitor at the Pulse. The course consists of three days in class, a theoretical written test and an in-person practical exam. Some of the topics included in the course are:
- Fitness, Wellness, and training principles
- Nutrition and bioenergetics
- Cardiorespiratory, skeletal and muscular system anatomy and function
- Flexibility, mobility and fascia
- Passive and dynamic assessments
- Periodized program design and delivery
- The business of personal training

- Diversity, equity and inclusion components throughout to recognize and create a more inclusive training environment
MACtivate is a partnership between Athletics & Recreation, the Student Wellness Centre and other student service areas on campus. It supports and provides students with opportunities and access to consistent and regular physical activity, with the goal of improving their overall mental health.
The program aims to have physicians, therapists, counsellors, etc., prescribe the program for mental and physical health issues as a complement to other treatment(s). MACtivate provides education, support and resources for getting active on campus to help improve our students’ overall well-being (academic, social, mental and physical) through physical activity.
A referral from the Student Wellness Centre is required to participate in the program.
The Adults with Disabilities Assisted Physical Training (ADAPT) Program is a one-on-one fitness program for individuals with disabilities at the Pulse. ADAPT pairs clients with student volunteers who will aid with workouts suited to the client’s unique needs. The program was designed to make the gym more accessible and reduce any barriers that one may face.
Mission: Our program’s mission is to promote the physical and mental well-being of persons with disabilities by providing them with personalized support and guidance from trained student volunteers.

Eligibility: Any McMaster student or community member with a Pulse membership who has a disability may apply to this program. Whether you need help setting up to use a machine, assistance with transfers or someone to keep you focused on completing your exercises, this program is fitted to your own unique needs. Your assigned volunteer is just there to help you through your workouts in whatever capacity you would like or require. Please note that volunteers are not personal trainers and, therefore, are not able to assist in a trainer capacity.

Program Timelines: The program coordinator will pair you with a volunteer who will work around your schedule. This program generally takes place year-round, following the university cycle. The minimum commitment is one semester (roughly four months).
Costs: Participating in this program is free. However, you must have a valid Pulse Membership.
Volunteers: We generally accept new volunteers before the start of each semester. Announcements about application openings will be posted on Pulse Instagram (@mcmasterpulse). We’re taking the fear out of fitness! GymBuds is a student-led program that allows McMaster students to connect with other students who share their passion for fitness.
We offer two different programs:
- We help connect new or inexperienced students with upper-year students who can provide a tour and introduction to the pulse facilities. This program aims to help students feel more comfortable in the pulse.
- We offer a platform that helps students meet new workout buddies. Having a Gym Buddy makes fitness more fun and helps keep you accountable.

Interested in personal training but want to train with some friends? Research shows that one of the most effective ways to commit to an exercise program is to workout with a partner. A Pulse personal trainer will help you design and implement a program that you and your friends can do together. Train as a team!

My background in Kinesiology and passion for sports & fitness inspired me to become a personal trainer, supporting others in their fitness journey. From years of playing competitive basketball to discovering a love for long-distance running and completing half marathons, I have experienced the pure enjoyment of moving my body, pushing limits, and achieving big goals. Training both the body and mind has shaped who I am and deepened my belief in the power of fitness. I hope to share my knowledge and experiences that help others find the same fulfillment and motivation.

Pulse Fitness Centre Rules of Use
We strive to make the Pulse Fitness Centre a welcoming and inclusive environment. Students and members must adhere to the McMaster University Code of Rights and Responsibilities and follow the rules listed and the directions of Pulse staff. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, all members are expected to treat others with respect, kindness, and consideration while in the facility.
- Wipe down equipment after use.
- Weights and other equipment must be returned to their designated location after use.
- All lifting must be done in a controlled manner. All drops must be controlled.
- No profanity or excessive noise is permitted.
- Equipment is not to be removed from the Fitness Centre.
- Bags and coats are not permitted in the fitness facility.
- No food, cans, or glass bottles in the fitness facility. Only plastic or metal water bottles are permitted.
- To ensure the safety, quality, and consistency of our services, only authorized Pulse staff are permitted to provide personal training or fitness instruction within the facility. This includes both paid and volunteer training. Outside personal training by non-staff members is strictly prohibited.

Dress Code
Proper athletic footwear must be worn. Bare feet (or socks), sandals, work boots, dress shoes and Crocs are not acceptable. Shoes worn outside must be cleaned before entering the Pulse. Trousers, jeans, cut-offs and pants with zippers or snaps are not acceptable.

How do I become a member of the Pulse?
All full-time McMaster University students have a Pulse membership included in their tuition, granting them full access. Part-time students, co-op students and community members need to pay a fee. Anyone without a membership must purchase a day pass to enter the Pulse, available at the Joan Buddle Service Desk in the David Braley Athletic Centre.
What is the McMaster Pulse Dress Code?
Bags, coats and outdoor/open-toed shoes are not permitted inside the Pulse. Items can be stored in lockers located in the change rooms.
Sealed water bottles with water are allowed in the Pulse. However, other drinks, such as smoothies or coffees, are not permitted as they can damage equipment if spilled. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
How do I attend Group Fitness Classes?
Group fitness classes are held on Level 2 of the Pulse: Studio 1 for Group Fitness and Studio 2 for Cycling. No prior sign-up is needed for regular group fitness classes. Simply show up in athletic clothes and shoes and bring a water bottle. The instructor will guide you through the rest. All fitness levels are welcome.
Can I do Personal Training?
Yes, we have highly skilled Student Personal Trainers. If you are interested in personal training, please email thepulse@mcmaster.ca for further details, including trainer assignments and pricing.
What programs are offered?
ADAPT: The Adults with Disabilities Assisted Physical Training (ADAPT) Program is a one-on-one fitness program for individuals with disabilities. ADAPT pairs clients with student volunteers who assist with workouts tailored to the client’s needs. The program aims to make the gym more accessible and reduce barriers. MACtivate: MACtivate is a partnership between Athletics & Recreation, the Student Wellness Centre and other student services to support McMaster students by providing access to regular physical activity, aiming to improve overall mental health. The program involves physicians, therapists, and counsellors prescribing physical activity as a complement to other treatments. A referral from the Student Wellness Centre is required to participate.
Women on Weights: This 6-week program is designed to teach women of all ages and abilities the importance of resistance training. Participants will learn proper exercise techniques, gym etiquette, nutrition, and more. This educational program aims to empower women to feel confident and comfortable in the gym. Note that this is not a fitness workout but an educational program.
Is there a women-only studio?
Yes, there is a women-only studio location on Level 1 for female-identifying members, equipped with a range of fitness equipment and weights.
I am nervous about coming to the gym for the first time. Is there support?
We understand that the gym can be an intimidating place. This is why we have GymBuds!
We offer two different programs:
- We help connect new or inexperienced students with upper-year students who can provide a tour and introduction to the pulse facilities. This program aims to help students feel more comfortable in the pulse.
- We offer a platform that helps students meet new workout buddies. Having a Gym Buddy makes fitness more fun and helps keep you accountable.
