About Outdoor Recreation Clubs
Learn how to get involved in one of McMaster’s outdoor recreation clubs.
The McMaster Climbing Club is dedicated to providing its members with a comprehensive climbing experience. We offer weekly member-only practices tailored to different skill levels: one aimed at getting beginner climbers comfortable on the wall and another which works with more intermediate climbers looking to push their climbing to the next level. We lead trips to local climbing spots, both to build climbers’ confidence and show them what southern Ontario has to offer. Throughout the year, we also host a variety of events not only for our members but also for the alumni and staff, fostering a vibrant climbing culture for all to enjoy.

The Youth Climbing Club is a fun and challenging introduction to top roping and bouldering. This course is designed for youth ages 5–15, with a desire to climb and learn the skills to get started in the world of climbing. Children outside of that age range may participate at the discretion of the instructors. You will learn how to tie knots, climbing techniques and team skills, all under the guidance of experienced rock climbers. Designed for both experienced and non-experienced youth climbers. The course runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays for a total of eight sessions. Sign up in the David Braley Athletic Centre business office or online.

About Outdoor Recreation Courses
The Outdoor Recreation program offers many ways to gain or enhance outdoor skills, including training courses. Most courses include McMaster or external certification. Most courses are offered based on demand, so they may not be scheduled each year. Please contact altitud@mcmaster.ca for course content or schedule questions.
The Standard Hike Leader is aimed at group hike leaders who typically want to develop leadership skills for leading day hikes from 5 to 20km along blazed hiking trails in Ontario.
Topics include:
- Group dynamics
- Hike planning
- Risk avoidance
- Leadership
- Trail etiquette
This course includes a certification from Hike Ontario, our province’s keenest community hiking organization. The course includes the Hike Ontario manual.
The ORCKA Canoeing Program consists of four canoeing disciplines, each with three skill levels. It begins with canoeing fundamentals (Basic Canoeing) and progresses to the highest canoeing skills level (Level 3).
The ORCKA Canoeing Program is the only provincially and nationally accepted canoeing program used within the province of Ontario.
This workshop is designed to help trip leaders recognize, assess, manage and avoid situations of potential risk in remote settings. We will also review the importance of establishing and maintaining a healthy group atmosphere, techniques for establishing clear goals and expectations within a trip group, and the subtleties of group dynamics. Upon successful completion of the workshop, a certificate will be awarded.
We offer a variety of wilderness first aid certifications through our partners at Wilderness Medical Associates. All courses require pre-registration and full payment upon registration. Please register at the DBAC Registration Office.
For those coming from outside of Hamilton, we also offer camping facilities to assist with your stay and during your time taking the courses. Please inquire for more information. Contact Wayne Terryberry: 905-525-9140 Ext. 2638, terryber@mcmaster.ca.
